Experts Warn of Coming Crisis in Geriatric Mental Health

In a report published in the September, 1999 issue of Archives of General Psychiatry,  a panel of experts in geriatric mental health warn of a coming crisis in geriatric mental health.  Noting that the mental health system already doesn't do well in providing services to the elderly, the situation will only worsen as the aging population in the US increases to 15 million over the next 30 years.

In article whose primary author was Dr. Dilip Jeste at the University of California at San Diego, the panel recommends that a 15-25 year plan for research on mental disorders should be formulated.  This research should focus on preventing psychiatric disorders and ways of translating traditional scientific, or "bench" research into treatment interventions.  An especially important need is for large-scale trials of treatments for psychiatric problems.

Archives of General Psychiatry, September 1999. (Vol. 56, pp. 848-853).
